5 Interesting Learnings from Zoom at $4.7 Billion in ARR | SaaStr

So Zoom has entered its mature stage, but it’s also now rebooting itself.  It’s dropped “Video” from its name as it has gone communications and AI-first:

  • $4.7B ARR
  • 3.6% Growth Overall
  • Very, very profitable — generating almost $2B in free cash flow a year

Growth is up just 3.6%, but Zoom has raised guidance — and the stock is up a strong 20% this year.  And it still trades at 5x ARR.

#1.  Average Monthly Self-Serve (“Online”) Churn Hit New Low of 2.7% a Month

Churn especially SMB churn remains Zoom’s biggest challenge at its mature state, but it’s been pushing customers to annual and longer contracts and more.  It’s seen churn fall to 2.7% a month, down from 3%.

#2.  98% NRR from Enterprise Customers, Down from 101% a Year Ago and 115% in 2023.

Less than 100%, but still close.

#3.  $100k+ Customers Only Segment Growing, Are 31% of Revenue.  Enterprise Overall Now 59% of Revenue

Overall enterprise customer count is flat, but $100k+ customers are up 7%,  Like many growing more slowly today, their focus is in the enterprise.

#4.  Insanely Profitable

Zoom’s growth may have slowed, but not its cash flow.  It’s generating almost $2 Billion in cash a year.  That’s over 40% free-cash flow margins.

#5.  Contact Center and Workvio (Employee Engagement) Products Are Growth Levers Today

CEO Eric Yuan is the GM of the Contact Center business himself, and their Workivo acquisition of 2 years ago has worked well.  This is their big multi-product push.  It’s working, but still with NRR now under 100% from enterprise customers, it’s arguably later than it should have been.

It’s been quite a journey from Zoom.  From self-serve rocketship to $100m ARR, to the app that kept us from going crazy during lockdown, to an enterprise-focused leader in collaboration today.  A lot of change.  As it always is, really.
